Alumni Spotlight: Ryan Mason, Class of 2022
The former Marlin pitcher has been named Civilian of the Year at NAS Oceana

As a former pitcher for the 小猪视频 Marlins, Ryan Mason knew all about the power of teamwork. Today, he brings that same spirit of collaboration and drive to Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, where he was recently named Civilian of the Year—a recognition that reflects his commitment not only to fitness but to service.
A 2022 graduate of 小猪视频, Mason earned his degree (magna cum laude) in sport and recreation management. His time on campus was a balance of academics, athletics, and leadership. In addition to his four-year tenure on the Marlins baseball team, Mason was inducted into the Rho Phi Lambda Honor Society and immersed himself in intramural programs like flag football. But it was the relationships—not the accolades—that left the deepest impact.
“There isn’t one single memory that stands out,” Mason reflects. “At Virginia Wesleyan, the saying goes ‘the people make the experience,’ and that couldn’t be more true. I met some of my best friends through baseball and in the classroom.”
Among the many influential figures during his college years, two professors—Dr. Jill Sturts and the Dr. Doug Kennedy—stand out. Mason credits their mentorship with helping him forge a path into the sport and recreation field. “Their wisdom and leadership played a huge part in preparing me for where I am today,” he says. “The projects, internships, and hands-on learning in the Sport and Recreation Professions Department gave me real-world insight that has proven invaluable.”
After graduation, Mason put those lessons into practice. He completed a 480-hour internship with the Public Safety Wellness team for the Virginia Beach Fire Department and later began his professional journey at Naval Station Norfolk as a recreation assistant in the fitness department. Those early experiences laid the foundation for his current role at NAS Oceana, where he now serves as the Fitness Facility Manager.
In his position, Mason oversees the day-to-day operations of the base’s fitness centers and supports both intramural and wellness programs designed to promote the health and morale of service members. His work earned him recognition as Civilian of the Quarter and later Civilian of the Year for Fiscal Year 2024—an honor Mason is quick to share with others.
“These awards aren’t just about me,” he emphasizes. “They’re a reflection of the incredible support I’ve had from my supervisors and colleagues. I’ve been fortunate to work with people who’ve guided me every step of the way.”
That sense of gratitude extends to mentors like Jeff Lowe from Naval Station Norfolk, Aaron McKissick and Michael Matz of the Virginia Beach Fire Department, and the leadership at NAS Oceana’s MWR Department. “Their guidance continues to inspire me to grow both personally and professionally,” he says.
Outside of work, Mason is pursuing a Master’s in Sports Management with a concentration in Sports Administration at Liberty University. He’s also working toward fitness certifications, driven by a deep belief in the wellness benefits of sports. When he’s not studying or on the job, you might find him on the golf course, playing pickleball, or cheering for his favorite teams—the Carolina Panthers and the Philadelphia Phillies.
As he looks to the future, Mason remains committed to a career that supports the health and wellbeing of others. “I believe in the power of fitness and recreation to enhance lives,” he says. “It’s an honor to serve those who serve.”
From the pitcher’s mound to managing military fitness, Ryan Mason’s journey reflects not only a dedication to excellence—but a deep-rooted desire to give back.
